Maritime IPS (MIPS)

Built for care and work at sea

An International Patient Summary for seafarers, based on patient-mediated exchange: the seafarer carries his own signed health record and decides who sees it.

The problem

Seafarers receive care on board, from telemedical services (TMAS), in port clinics and in hospitals all over the world. Their medical information rarely travels with them: the next doctor often starts without history, medication or allergies.

The people who keep the world moving

2.57 million
seafarers worldwide
85,000+
merchant ships carrying food, fuel and goods
4 countries
can be involved in one seafarer’s care: home, employer, flag and port

Fatigue, physical strain and long periods of isolation make seafarers a vulnerable occupational group. Yet instead of a medical record, they often carry a loose bundle of documents collected over a career, and they have the least influence over how their own medical data is collected, stored or shared.

The solution

Patient-mediated exchange

The seafarer carries his own signed summary in the MIPS app and shares it himself, by QR code or secure link.

Consent

He decides who sees it. Agreeing to a consultation means the treating doctor may view and update it; he is always informed.

Trust

Every entry is signed by the clinic or TMAS and checked against a trust list, so the next doctor can rely on it. Secure and private by design.

Built on the IPS: the foundation

Based on the International Patient Summary, the international standard for cross-border and emergency care. MIPS adds what seafarers need. More about the IPS →

What is MIPS?

MIPS is the seafarer’s own health summary on his phone: medical history, medication, allergies and fitness for duty, in one signed record.

He shares it by QR code or secure link with the medical officer on board, TMAS, a port clinic or a hospital, in any country. Every doctor who treats him adds a signed update, so the next doctor can continue the care without gaps.
